Dozens of community gardens across the metro are now accepting new gardeners. The increase in the local foods movement led to a gardening boom in Omaha allowing renters and new urban farmers the opportunity to grow their own fruits and vegetables.

The Douglas County Health Department created and leads the local community garden network. Its website, has a feature that includes a map of all community gardens and farmers markets. Visitors simply type in their address and a map will show them their neighborhood gardens and markets.

Among the many benefits, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, you can burn 150 calories by gardening (standing) for approximately 30-45 minutes.
