A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until midnight Sunday for much of eastern Nebraska, including Omaha. A tornado watch is in effect until 10 p.m. for Nebraska counties south of the metro and a large portion of western Iowa, including Council Bluffs.
People who live in or near the central Nebraska village of Oconto are donating clothes and household items for family members who fled flames that destroyed their home.
Lexington radio station KRVN says the fire was reported about 2:15 a.m. Wednesday. Ronald and Janelle Alspaugh and their four children escaped from the house, which now sits as a charred shell about four miles northwest of Oconto.
No injuries have been reported. The fire cause is being investigated.
Oconto is a village of about 150 residents in Custer County.
