University of Iowa President Sally Mason says she wanted the Board of Regents to put in writing an agreement to hire her husband as a lecturer and a fundraiser, but settled on a handshake.
The Des Moines Register says Iowa's obligation to provide Ken Mason with two jobs was not publicly disclosed when she was hired in 2007, and hasn't been explained.
In a Web chat Wednesday by the Iowa City-Press Citizen, Sally Mason said when she was hired, she asked that her husband be employed to teach biology and as a fundraiser. She says her request was "granted on a handshake."
Regents President Michael Gartner doesn't recall the agreement.
Regent David Miles agrees with Mason's recollection, but isn't sure why it wasn't part of a written agreement.
