A close call in Council Bluffs Sunday afternoon as firefighters managed to keep a grass fire from burning nearby homes.
An hour or so later, homeowners continue the job with their water hoses. Matt Whitney sprinkles the remains of his charred yard.
"I did not think it could move that fast, it was definitely scary," said Whitney as he describes the fire.
Two doors down, Brian Mauer parrots the same reality, "I've never seen fire move that fast."
Dry conditions and strong winds hampered the effort as the flames moved along Ashley Lane near McPherson Avenue east of the Bent Tree Golf Course starting just before 1 p.m.
The blaze covered an area of about 200 yards with 15 homes in its path. No one was hurt.
Firefighters said the cause was a couple burning documents in a fire pit.
