The deadline is Saturday, March 15 for Omaha and Sarpy County residents to license pets.

All residents should have received renewal invoices in the mail if they have licensed their pets in the past. Pet owners can renew or acquire new notices the following ways:

  • In person at the Nebraska Humane Society at 90th and Fort St, Omaha. Hours are 9am-7pmweekdays and 10am-5pm weekends (Be prepared for lines during peak times like lunch and right after work).
  • Through the mail with your invoice or downloaded form (just make sure it’s postmarked by March 15).
  • At most veterinary offices—check to see if yours performs this service.
  • On-line -- click on the related links section to do so now

All pets must have a valid rabies vaccination to obtain a license; however, if pet owners cannot get a timely vet appointment they should still pay the licensing fee by March 15 to avoid penalty fees. Then they have 30 days to obtain a rabies vaccination.

In Omaha, if you don’t license your pet by March 15 you are subject to a penalty fee imposed by the city (on top of the cost of licensing). The Nebraska Humane Society said not licensing can also be considered a “first strike” toward a reckless owner designation, which is another reason to license on time.
