Classroom To Kitchen, Students Compete In Cooking Challenge

Rachel Perkins says, "I’m happy I get to make something so beautiful for someone." Creating something from nothing using ingredients, pans, knives and...creativity.

The fun of cooking but also the challenge of competing, Sara Howe says, "It can be stressful at times, especially at competitions when they put you under time limits."

This team, the Bellevue East "Fusion Chefs", cooked up a three course meal, starting off with scallops and asparagus, the main course is a Pistachio crusted chicken and dessert, an apple and cream filled egg roll, the hardest part? Darren says, "Is managing the heat of the oil, making sure the chicken doesn't cook too fast."

The team of four works together to create their meal, Darren is in charge of the chicken, Sara, the scallop appetizer. Once finished, they rushed the food to the three judge panel for tasting. Alex says, "My favorite thing on the dish would be the sesame, vinaigrette with the asparagus followed by the pistachio crusted chicken."

Fairlie says the food service business is tough and competitive, but this competition gives students a *fork up* in starting out. Rachel says, "It was so much fun, yet stressful at the same time."

The competition wraps up tomorrow as total scores are tallied and calculated. The1st place team, all four of them, will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the Institute, the 2nd place team, $500.
