With teens and young adults on break from school, what better way to spend the free time than by applying for summer work. The city of Omaha hosted a job fair Thursday and both new and returning applicants said it's about one thing, making their wallets greener.
Thinking greens on a snowy day in December, the Omaha Parks and Recreation Department was trying to fill vacant slots at city golf courses, among other positions.
The most popular job had returning applicants vying for a position at a city pool. “I'm on winter break, but I'm going to make sure I have a job for the summer,” said Omaha Central High School student Maya Pirie. “I was a cashier last summer at the pool, too."
“I love it, I am currently a lifeguard at the YMCA and I just want to keep doing it, especially over the summer at an outdoor pool,” said Millard West student Laura Quigley Jr.
“It's rewarding having the work experience and working with the kids and just getting out there and getting a job,” said Omaha South student Milah Adams Jr.
Organizers hope to hire about 500 people, young and old, for summer work in 2013. “It is exciting because they come back with all this new energy and they can't wait for summer and they are on Christmas break and so it is kind of a refreshing break for us in the middle of winter,” said Parks and Recreation coordinator Cheryll Peterson-Brachle.
Erin Williams is a first- time applicant. Her father John was there to help guide her. "Good eye contact and speaking loudly." He said it is about responsibility for Erin. “I like to shop and my parents don't like to pay for it. I will probably use my money in that way."
There's still time to submit an application. You can do so from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Christie Heights Center (5105 South 37th Street, 402-444-6280) and from 3-6 p.m. Friday at Camelot Center (9270 Cady Avenue, 402-444-5972). Applicants must bring a photo ID and their Social Security card.
Applications are being taken for aquatics, golf, Hummel Park Day Camp, park maintenance and the Kids Clubhouse.
