Changing the Way Cars Are Rated

Kids ride in minivans while seniors tend to favor luxury cars over vans and SUV's. That's not news, just a reality that federal regulators are taking into considerations as they prepare to change the way cars are rated for safety.

They're considering adding a Silver rating that would assess the safety of the vehicle for older occupants and a Family rating for how well it protects rear-seat passengers, like kids.

Offficials say if approved, it would take three to four years to implement the new ratings.
