Challenges Await Legislative Primary Winners

The winners of Nebraska's legislative primary will compete for jobs fraught with budget challenges, the loss of seasoned committee leaders and debates over education and economic development.

Lawmakers returning to Lincoln in January will have to set a new
two-year state spending plan, and many have said they want to find
a way to lower property taxes on Nebraska farm land.

Nebraska primary voters will choose legislative candidates for 26 districts, including 17 in which incumbents are seeking re-election. The primary will narrow the field in 10 of the races which have three or more candidates.

Under Nebraska's primary system, the top two vote-getters will advance to the general election in November. The one-house,
49-member Legislature is officially nonpartisan, so candidates
aren't identified by party labels on the ballot.
