Cedar Rapids, Iowa soon will be seeking bids for retiring its "Mount Trashmore" landfill under grass and a mound of dirt.

The process to close the site could cost about $3.2 million.

Mount Trashmore is the local nickname for Linn County Solid Waste site 1. The landfill reopened shortly after the 2008 flood and accepted 427,000 tons of flood debris, rising 34 feet.

The landfill closed again in November to further dumping.

The city hopes to redevelop the site with a park or recreation trail but must wait 10 years for the site to settle.
