Omaha's Catholic Archbishop George J. Lucas announced plans Tuesday to consolidate churches and schools in the eastern part of the city.
After a transition year, five schools -- Holy Cross, Our Lady Of Lourdes, Saints Peter &Paul, St. Bernadette and St. Thomas Moore -- will make up what are being called the consortium schools.
The five schools will receive students from three schools that will close after the 2012-2013 school year. Those schools are Holy Ghost, Assumption-Guadalupe and St. Stanislaus.
A number of churches will also merge with other churches in the Archdiocese. Archbishop Lucas says all of the changes are necessary because of changing population patterns in the city.
Lucas said Tuesday the strategic plan will make sure young people living east of 72nd street will have access to quality Catholic schools and faith-filled parishes for years to come.
