It's an issue that's been discussed ever since casinos opened in Council Bluffs almost 20 years ago. Should casino gaming be legalized in Nebraska?
It's a hand that’s been dealt before, but has never passed. Now LR 375 would ask voters to decide if casino gaming should be allowed in Nebraska. Officials say more people from Omaha and Nebraska visit the casinos in Council Bluffs than anyone else leading to millions of dollars crossing the border.
"I don't know what Nebraskans and Omahans are thinking, it's absurd. Why have all that money going to Iowa?" questioned Mike Digiorgio of Omaha.
The resolution says lawmakers would determine the amount of revenues that would be transferred to the cash reserve fund. Of the remaining balance 75% would go to education, 24% to public transportation infrastructure, and 1% to the compulsive gamblers assistance fund.
Opponents say casino gambling would have a negative influence on our communities both socially and economically by exploiting citizens, and generating only a small portion of state budget needs.
"If it's a thing they could use to lower property taxes and keep our tax base lower, I'm all for it. But there are a lot of bad sides to go with that, it's like where would they put it?" said Tim Yambor of Omaha.
A hearing has been set for the casino gaming resolution for Monday at the state capitol.
