Dennis Adams parks his work truck in his driveway. Early Monday morning a thief got behind wheel, not to steal the truck but what was inside. Dennis said, “So he got in and shut the door behind him. They do that so it’s dark.”
But the thief couldn’t hide from an alert LaVista police officer patrolling the neighborhood just two blocks from LaVista police headquarters.
The officer spotted a stolen vehicle and when he turned around to check it out, the car burglar jumped from Dennis’ work truck and ran. A GPS device and two way radio belonging to Dennis was dropped at his doorstep. Dennis said, “I’m lucky a police officer was close by doing rounds and that’s what scared off the thief. He didn’t have time to go through the truck and I still had stuff in it.”
LaVista Chief Bob Lausten said, “We believe there were other car break-ins last night. This officer prevented one in progress and maybe more that night.”
Inside the stolen get away pickup the thief left behind were stereo parts and book bags. All have been turned over to Omaha police. The pickup had been stolen in Omaha.
The thief used it to cruise neighborhoods looking for parked vehicles that might be unlocked.
Dennis had left his door unlocked but he said that won’t happen again.
