Campsites Full For Memorial Weekend

For many in the Heartland, camping is a huge part of their Memorial Day Weekend, but if you didn't plan in advance you might be staying home.

Steve Stessman came out early to grab what he says is the best two camping spots at Mahoney State Park.

“It becomes earlier and earlier every year, this year we came out on Friday night and reserved one spot,” says Stessman.

“We couldn't get two together so we came out Sunday because we knew the people next door were moving out.”

After booking a couple of reserve spots he wanted transferred them to first come first serve.

His daughter, Morgan looks forward to the great spot every year.

“I like to go swim and there's a creek down behind our spot. I like to go hiking with my cousin.”

Park officials expect 3,000 visitors to camp overnight throughout the weekend and more than 7000 people to visit each day.

The park's 149 camp sites were full by Tuesday.

Bernice Luthy has been coming to the park on Memorial weekend for over 20 years.

“We usually get our spots a year to the day ahead of time and we've been in this spot quite a few years,” says Luthy.

Officials at Mahoney State Park say some campers start to leave as early as Saturday so if you still want a spot you can call the park at (402) 944-2523 to see what is available.
