What looks like progress at a Benson area eyesore may be not be all it seems.
CVS Pharmacy bought the corner lot at 72nd and Maple when the CVS on Dodge was built nearly four years ago.
The 72nd St. location has been a mess ever since.
Now, dirt's being moved but a WOWT 6 News Fact Finders Investigation finds the activity may be deceiving.
One scoop at a time this hilly eyesore on the corner of 72nd and Maple grows smaller.
Beverly Zoll lives right across the street with a daily bird's eye view.
"The noise don't bother me much," she said. "Just the ugly mess and the dust and it's ugly."
Kailie Biegger's grandparents live across from the truck entrance.
Kailie says it's a sign of unkempt promises.
"It's been going on for years now. and they said they'd do it this year and a year will go by and they say they'll do it another year and it's like....come on now," she said.
"They" is CVS Pharmacy. The company bought the site in 2010 promising a new store.
Four years later, nothing changed.
Until now, but it's not CVS grading the lot.
The dirt taken from here is heading to 45th and Maple for expansion at Girls Inc.
The contractor for that project contacted CVS and asked if he could have clean dirt.
But there's a lot of "junk" buried here.
The responsibility of removing this junk falls on the property owner --- CVS.
The contractor said he has called CVS several times about taking the junk to the landfill, but said CVS has not returned his call.
The lack of forward movement frustrates everyone.
"I've been in contact with CVS probably every six months," Omaha City Councilman Pete Festersen said. "And so far they haven't said they're not doing the project but it clearly hasn't started yet and so we've been urging them to do that but absent that occurring we need to move on and make this another productive corner for another opportunity."
For his part, the excavation contractor plans to slope the land and seed it.
But for now, the eyesore remains...right in Beverly Zoll's view.
"I want to see it look decent down there," she said. "I don't care if they build down there."
We contacted CVS for an official statement.
The company confirmed that the work being done there is "unrelated to store construction".
We asked about their plans.
They say, "we have no announcement regarding a timetable for opening a store at this location."
