A major employer in Council Bluffs is ceasing operations. U.S. Pipe Products, which acquired Griffin Pipe Products several weeks ago, is shutting down the Griffin Pipe plant in May. This means about 250 workers will be out of a job.
Council Bluffs Mayor Matt Walsh tells WOWT 6 News that the company originally announced that the third shift was being laid off due to the fact that inventories were high and demand was low. The C.B. plant is at S 26th Street & 9th Avenue.
Walsh says if things improve, U.S. Pipe Products could resume operations at the Council Bluffs plant. He describes the jobs as well-paying jobs with good benefits. The mayor says his concerns are with the workers who are being displaced and their families.
