A busy Cass county road during harvest called Church Road is back open.Traffic began traveling the newly paved three-mile segment on Friday. The paving of Church Road from Highway 63 to Highway 6 was the county’s biggest road construction project of the season.
The Cassgram reports Vrana Construction was awarded the contract in April after being the lowest of six bidders at $1.39 million. The county had been bracing for the cost to be somewhere in the neighborhood of the engineer’s $2.3 million estimate for the build-up and new concrete project.
Cass County Roads Department Construction Foreman Jerry Fleischman said lower concrete prices and the scarcity of new road construction projects this year probably contributed to the lower than expected bids.
In supporting the project, county board members pointed to the traffic, especially heavy truck traffic on the three-mile stretch of road, and to the possibilities for economic development in that area along Interstate 80. It is also a major farm-to-market artery.
