A Fort Calhoun area businessman wants you to send him to Washington, DC. Republican Clifton Johnson is running for Senate.

The political newcomer says his shock over the direction the country is taking motivated him to get in the race.

"The socialist express that is roaring down the tracks must be derailed now," reads the release announcing his candidacy.

Johnson is running for Sen. Mike Johanns' seat. Johanns is not seeking reelection.

Other candidates include banker Sid Dinsdale, rancher Jim Jenkins, attorney Bart McLeay, former State Treasurer Shane Osborn, and President of Midland University Ben Sasse.

In the release announcing his candidacy, Johnson says he knows he can't compete financially with other candidates' campaigns.

He says he's counting on 'patriotic' voters to support his campaign.

"I need to succeed in the May 13th primary to take on our fight."

Johnson is married. He has a daughter named America and a son named Preston.
