Busiest Day Of The Year At The Post Office

We survived the busiest shopping day of the year, but Monday another one is upon us.

It's the busiest mailing day of the year.

And the clock to get our packages delivered on time is ticking.

It didn't look like it at the counter of the main post office at 11th and Pacific Monday morning.

But it's the busiest day of the year for Christmas mailings.

Garland Watkins had to get gifts sent to Atlanta.

"First, I had to get the shopping in, then get it boxed up," he said. "I was going to consider doing it Saturday and I said 'no it might be packed' so I said 'I'll try first thing Monday morning' and I got here so it wasn't too bad."

Chris Keeton wanted to be sure presents got to his grand baby in Colorado...on time.

"My wife did...I'm following orders," he laughed.

Mary Riley eluded long lines this morning, considering it's the busiest day of the year here.

"Yes, I had heard that but they're not busy yet so I didn't have to wait there was only maybe one person ahead of me," she said.

The real action was going on behind the counter...in the plant.

Here more than 1.5 million pieces of mail are expected to be processed by tonight.

Package deliveries are up 12 percent.

Employees will be working overtime...with about 65 temporary workers added for this time of year.

And there will be deliveries on Christmas Day this year to insure packages get there on time.

So the post office will be humming with activity these next several days.

With an occasional thank you delivery here as well.

Edgar Hayes brought in cookies and candy.

"They're such nice people that work here and just thought about them and brought them something over," he said.

A little appreciation for all the hard work that's just beginning.

If we haven't mailed those package out yet, there's still time, but it will cost a bit more.

The suggested mailing date for "first class" and "priority mail" is this Saturday.

The deadline for the real procrastinators, "priority mail express", is December 23rd.
