Investigators are looking for the cause of a fire that erupted in an old recycling plant near 26th and Center on Thursday.
Baptiste Beauvais was passing by and he told us, “I'm a volunteer firefighter in a small town so a fire this size is fairly spectacular."
The fire broke out in Can Pac Recycling.
Beauvais said, “I looked to the south and saw the black smoke and it looked like a pretty large fire."
It was reported at 11:34 a.m. and fire crews arrived five minutes later. Thirty firefighters attacked the vacant building from the outside for hours, eventually going inside to put out the hot spots.
Pat Salvatore owns the shop next door. He called in the fire and he told us, “I was right outside the garage door. So there's a garage door separating the end of the building and of course, we were trying to put up a sign and that didn't work out."
There were no injuries.
Authorities say they found evidence that transients might have been occupying the building. The search for a cause remains under investigation.
