A man and woman are being sought for burglarizing a garage near Gretna, getting away with some heavy-duty items.
“They didn't have a care in the world.” Theft victim Dan Battaglia showed a Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department detective where the burglars began. “These the pry marks here,” says detective Dana Harrah.
Dan's once full garage is now empty. “There was two, four-wheelers that were stolen and a motorcycle and a bunch of hand tools."
Security video shows the suspects wearing backpacks. Harrah believes the thieves carried bolt cutters in those backpacks so they could cut the chain, causing the automatic door to slide open. That's how they got in and found a pickup with the keys inside to get out, but not before taking their time stealing.
“They were here for about two-and-a-half hours,” says Harrah. “They're drinking the victim's beer, stealing a truck to load up the ATVs and motorcycle.”
Before cleaning out the garage, the suspects cleaned up after trying to steal another pickup. “They took the window and put it in the dumpster,” says Battaglia, who adds the stolen property didn't all belong to him. “That's why people work so you can buy nice stuff and for somebody else to just steal it is really hard to take.”
The casual approach by the suspects suggests they knew where to look without setting off alarms. “They drive away in a stolen pickup loaded with ATVs and more like it’s just another night’s work.”
The losses add up to more than $20,000. Anyone with information about the burglary or suspects is asked to call Sarpy County Crime Stoppers at 402-592-STOP.
