Bullet Resistant School Supplies

They're meant to protect our kids in a "worst-case" scenario. But would bullet-resistant backpacks -- and binders work in a school shooting?

New resource officer Caleb Martin strolls up and down the silent halls at Lifegate Christian School. Even at a private school armed security is now standard.

"We realize just because we are a private institution doesn't mean that we are immune from anything that we see in the public school arenas occurring," Mike Martin, Lifegate Church Security Director.

It was a decision made over time and with the help of a church coalition.

"Not only are we interested in their growth spiritually and academically, but we want to make this environment as safe as possible," said Roy Adams, School Executive Director.

To many, armed school security makes sense in this day and age.

But what about bullet resistant school supplies?

WOWT Six News purchased a black, bullet resistant notebook. It's the shape and size of a piece of paper, just a bit thicker. And it clicks into a three-ring binder like a school worksheet.

It's marketed as a tool a student could use during an active shooter situation.

The big question though, is it worth it?

"In a word, no. There's too many variables associated with a violent attack to say, you would have this in the right place at a right time," said Devin Crinklaw, 88 Tactical Senior Instructor.

We shot multiple guns at the notebook, and while it did stop three handguns (Glock 42 - .380 caliber, Glock 19 - 9 mm, and Glock 22 - 40 caliber), it didn't stop the AR-15 - .223 caliber or the AKM - 7.62 mm by 39 caliber.

Members of 88 Tactical agree, time and money would be better spent on training a student on recognizing danger, how to escape, hide, or in a last resort fight back.

Which brings us back to armed guard Caleb at Lifegate Christian School.

"You can't be naive to the world around us. The last thing I would want to do is to say that we didn't take all the measures that we possibly could," said Adams.

And Caleb, is more than just a resource officer, he is a mentor to the children.

"He is a great role model he is a fine young man, he has a positive influence on young men and women," said Martin.

Not to mention, he is constantly on the watch for anything out of place.
