Women with dense breasts do not appear to have an increased risk for dying from breast cancer, contrary to past research findings.
A study of 9,000 women found -- while tumors are harder to detect in women with dense breasts -- they are not more aggressive or deadly.
Dense breasts make mammograms harder to interpret because the tissue appears white -- the same color as tumors.
However, doctors say women with this type of breast tissue need to be aware that they have an increased risk for breast cancer -- and regular screening may be necessary.
Women with dense breasts often need additional testing (besides mammograms).
