A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for areas west of Omaha until 11 p.m.; however, the metro area will likely have thunderstorms on and off throughout the overnight.
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has named 30 people to a panel that recommends candidates to become new district court judges.
The governor on Wednesday released a list of appointments for each of the state's 14 judicial districts. In those districts, the nominating panel consists of five people appointed by the governor and five elected by the Bar Association. Each panel is chaired by the senior judge in the district.
A separate 15-member nominating commission handles appointments to the Iowa Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. It includes seven appointed by the governor, seven elected by the Bar Association and is chaired by the senior justice on the Supreme Court.
The district commissions takes applications when there are district judge openings, and recommends two finalists to the governor.
