It happened a little before 9 p.m. while five people between the ages of nine and 20 were swimming below a dam. Deontae Haynes was reportedly wading in the water when he stepped into water over his head and was pulled toward the dam by the undertow.
Sixteen-year-old Tamra Haley of Clarinda attempted to save him, but ingested water and had to be rescued by others at the scene.
Haynes was recovered in approximately 27-feet of water by divers and transported to the hospital in Clarinda where he was pronounced dead.
Haley was hospitalized in good condition at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha.
