Christmas is now over and it’s time to start thinking about taking down the decorations and throwing away the tree, but that can be quite a task. An Omaha Boy Scout troop is trying to make things a little easier.

It was a cold Saturday morning in Omaha, but these Boy Scouts didn't mind. “It’s cold, but when you have the right gear on you’re warm,” said Gabe Saighman. They were braving the chill to help others. “It just feels good to help people, so they don’t have to do all the work themselves,” said J.B. Core.

The work they’re doing is picking up Christmas trees. Residents that live in a neighborhood west of 72nd Street can sign up. Residents can then leave their tree out in front of their home and the Scouts will take care of the rest.

“We take them to a drop-off location and they mulch them and use them for community parks and for fish habitats in the lakes,” said Dillon Shores.

The boys are one of several groups, a part of Troop 282 and Troop 558 who will be out and about picking up trees over the next few days. Saturday, they had around 100 locations on their list. One of those houses was the VanPuttens. “Thank you for coming to pick up my tree,” said Jeff VanPutten, who he really appreciates the service. “It can take time and effort, so it can be very convenient.”

The boys are learning the value of helping others. “Giving them the opportunity to serve is a great thing for them to learn,” said John Shores. Plus the boys were having fun. “I like doing it, it’s pretty fun," said Dillon Shores. "You get to hang out with your friends and help the community."

Residents interested in this service must make a reservation 24 hours in advance by calling 402-965-1458. You can also make a reservation online at

Tree pickup dates are December 29th, 30th and 31st. Also January 1st, 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th.
