An Omaha judge set bond Wednesday at 10 percent of $300,000 for a man accused of leading police on a chase following a string of robberies last Sunday. Twenty-two-year-old Larry Gaines is charged with four counts of robbery, two counts of attempted burglary and flight to avoid arrest.
According to police, Gaines tried to steal a car from outside the Little Caesars near 30th and Hanover, however, it wouldn't start. He then allegedly tried to steal a woman's purse, before carjacking another person.
An officer spotted Gaines and a chase ensued. Gaines allegedly ditched the first car at 30th and Shirley and tried to take another one. Police say he punched the vehicle's owner and ended up running from police on foot. He was arrested a short time later.
Gaines' attorney admits his client has a "checkered past," which includes a conviction for drug possession, however, he said his client was hit by a drunk driver last month and has been undergoing physical therapy.
Gaines is expected back in court May 8th for a preliminary hearing.
