Twenty-four-year-old Chad Fortner of Council Bluffs has been charged with Second Degree Murder for the death of a Glenwood woman.
Fortner is accused of killing 47-year-old Carol Meston in October.
On October 12th, emergency responders were called to Meston’s Glenwood home. Fortner was staying at the residence.
Fortner told authorities that he had been involved in an altercation with a man he knew and that Meston had been knocked to the ground during that fight. He said she hit her head on a piece of furniture and was knocked unconscious.
Ms. Meston never regained consciousness. She died the following day.
Based on an autopsy by the Iowa State Medical Examiner, investigators determined that Meston suffered a rupture of a vertebral artery and her death was ruled a homicide.
Fortner was charged on Tuesday and he's being held in the Mills County jail under a $50,000.00 bond.
