Blast Of Winter Weather

It doesn't take long for winter to arrive in the Heartland. Many people woke up this morning to howling winds and blowing snow but only a few let the weather keep them from their appointments.

People who were working today couldn't let a little snow and freezing wind keep them from their jobs and the people who were playing today wouldn't let the cold temperatures ruin a good time.

Whether it was work or play, the effort was hampered by a blast of winter.

It is early afternoon and Joe Benes and his girlfriend are done for the day. The UNO student started the snow removal business as a way to make a few bucks for school.

Today the weather was the hardest part of the job.

Joe Benes says, "The wind was blowing so there hasn't been too much accumulation on the driveways so I've been laying mostly salt and then shoveling whatever drift is there."

While Joe went willingly into the cold for his job others could not avoid the cold.

The Salvation Army opened two warming stations to help people get out of the cold. By early this afternoon no one had taken advantage of the hospitality but it will be available at least through Monday.

There were also people out today who did it just for fun.

At the Conagra Foods Ice Rink there were a few hearty souls, among them Amanda Fulton and Shawn Campbell. They are on their first date.

Shawn Campbell says, "I don't think it is all that bad out considering the trees I think you've got a nice little break and so once you get moving around you warm up just fine."

Amanda and Shawn continued to skate though the snow piled up on the ice. Even when everyone else had left the ice they circled the rink.

It could be the start of a storybook romance or at the very least a great first date story.
