As more Americans pile on credit card debt, fewer are looking for help to control their finances.

A study by shows consumers accumulated 18.4 billion dollars more in credit card debt in the second quarter than they did in the first quarter.

But the number of people looking for help to manage their debt was down 20% last year-and that downward trend is continuing this year.

The National Foundation For Credit Counseling says people need help, but many are just giving up.

Another factor could be the cost of debt settling programs. Consumers have to pay a portion of their debt plus a fee for the service once a settlement is reached.
