Lawmakers are mulling a bill that would let Nebraska cities offer "relocation incentives" at their own expense to attract new residents.
Sen. Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids presented the measure Tuesday to the Legislature's Urban Affairs Committee.
Sullivan says the bill would allow cities to create their own incentive programs to attract plumbers, electricians, nurses and other high-demand workers. Cities would use so-called LB840 money - revenue from a voter-approved, local option sales tax. Sixty cities have approved the tax for economic development projects.
The bill would let cities define what they count as "relocation incentives," but local officials would have to secure voter approval again to use the money for that purpose.
