William E. Nichols pleaded guilty in January to the random attack on a bike path near Clinton Lake. The woman was stabbed and officers say she may have been killed if two 19-year-old men had not chased Nichols away and helped her.
Before the sentencing on Monday, the 23-year-old woman told the court that the attack left her with physical scars and unable to trust strangers.
The local newspaper reports that Nichols apologized to the woman and told her she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He said he had sought help for mental issues before the attack but couldn't afford it.
