Something seems wrong went you return home such as an open door that was definitely closed before. How should you respond?

It's happened on a number of occasions within the last year.

A 17-year old girl was actually home when someone knocked on the door.

She acted wisely in not responding but moments later she heard the window break and voices inside the home.

Hidden in a closet, she phoned 9-1-1 and escaped the situation unharmed.

For Rob Wegman of Omaha it was a bold response.

When he realized that someone had broken into his garage, he grabbed his shotgun and confronted one of the burglars.

"And I just busted in clicked my shotgun and he headed to the back of the garage," Wegman told Channel 6 News. "I said get down on your knees and don't even think about moving.".

Even though two suspects were arrested, with our personal safety in mind Police don't recommend that type of response.

On April 23, 2013 Angela Casson had the frightening experience of interrupting a burglary in her home.

"I walked in the front door, my cat was going crazy, I followed it I walked into the kitchen, I saw the back door kicked open and that's when I ran out." she told Channel 6 News.

It's the response police recommend for all of us if we're faced with a similar situation. Safety is more important that the ten thousand dollar loss with the burglary in Angela's home.

Her call to 9-1-1 allowed Police to go inside the home and secure the situation.

Asked if she felt she did the right thing Angela said, "In a way yes because we used to have rifles that we use for hunting and I didn't know if they were still there or not. "

Police guidelines are simple: Run from the premises and call 9-1-1.
