Bernard Kanger Resume
Omaha officially got a new fire chief Wednesday as Bernie Kanger was sworn-in at City Hall.
Kanger has served as interim chief since Mike McDonnell retired last August. He was promoted last month.
About two dozen people were on hand for Wednesday’s ceremony including family, friends and other city leaders.
The new chief became emotional as he thanked his wife and children for their constant support.
Kanger said, "They gave me permission to go to school at night, to finish my degree, to spend nights away from home, while attending classes and seminars."
The chief joined the Omaha Fire Department in 1991 as a firefighter and served as a battalion chief at the time he was named interim chief.
