Bellevue first responders are used to giving but today they are going one step further. The Battle of the Badges is underway in Bellevue.
The friendly competition between Bellevue Police and Firefighters actually helps us all.
The blood donations restock the supply of blood products for the American Red Cross.
The "battle" is for a good cause but the competition is serious.
Ricky DeWitt is now a Lincoln Firefighter but is still donating two pints of blood.
Ricky DeWitt says, "Actually it started with the blood drives that Bellevue hosted and I've just been getting called for them ever since. Anytime they do a donation in the Bellevue area they're pretty good about giving us a call."
DeWitt is giving two pints which are being separated by a special machine into platelets, red blood cells and plasma. Much of DeWitt's donation is returned to his system.
The Red Cross does this for desired or universal donation blood types.
