BNSF Agrees to Improve Work Policies
BNSF railroad has reformed its policies on workplace injuries and whistleblowers as part of an agreement with regulators. The federal Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced the pact with BNSF Tuesday.
OSHA says BNSF's policies violated whistleblower provisions of the Federal Railroad Safety Act and discouraged injury reporting.
OSHA says railroad workers file more whistleblower complaints than any other industry it oversees.
The railroad will also require managers to review cases where an employee who reported an injury is disciplined.
BNSF agreed to settle 36 whistleblower complaints from employees.
BNSF Vice President Mark Schulze says he's glad the railroad could work with regulators constructively to resolve this issue.
BNSF is owned by Warren Buffett's Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc., and it's one of the nation's largest freight railroads.
