You have a chance to help tonight in the search for the driver who hit a man riding his bike and just kept driving. There were no witnesses, but a piece of evidence was left behind.
“Once I got hit, I hit the ground and just couldn't believe what happened,” said Dan Owens.
Owens got out of the hospital about a week ago, after suffering a broken arm, two plates holding his arm together and 15 screws.
He says he was riding his bike along Highway 92 in Pottawattamie County on July 10th, when someone swerved off the road and hit him. The driver drove off, leaving Owens lying on the side of the road.
But about 500 feet from the accident, authorities found a side mirror on the ground. They believe it’s the mirror that hit Owens. Deputies have kept that side mirror for evidence, using the model number to narrow down a vehicle.
Authorities believe that the person who hit Owens knows they hit him, based on the fact that they are missing a side mirror.
In the meantime, Owens continues to heal, hoping someone will come forward.
“It's been a long process, you don't realize how much you use your arm until you can't use it,” said Owens.
The sheriff's department has the model number; they've narrowed that down to one of the following: A Chevy CK Series 1500, 2500 or 3500. Or an SUV, Suburban, Tahoe or Yukon XL. They believe any of those models between 1988 and 1999 could be the suspect.
If you have any information you’re asked to call the in Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department at 712-890-2200.
