Funeral services were held Thursday in Grand Island for Aurora Police Chief Godfrey Brokenrope, who died of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident one week ago.
Hundreds attended a celebration of life ceremony, including state troopers, officers from across central Nebraska, the Patriot Guard and American Legion.
The Nebraska State Patrol said Brokenrope swerved to avoid hitting a car in front of him and crashed into the median along Interstate 80 near Milford around 5 p.m. last Thursday. He died Saturday at a Lincoln hospital.
The 50-year-old Brokenrope had been Aurora's police chief since 2006. He was an avid motorcycle rider and a mentor for the community's DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.
