The Auburn City Council has voted to save money and contract with the Nemaha County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement in the southeast Nebraska city.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the council voted 4-2 on Monday to make the change. The county board is scheduled to vote Wednesday on the proposal.

Under the proposed contract, deputies would take over city patrols starting Jan. 1. Auburn Mayor Scott Kudrna says the city would pay the county $283,000 a year. He says Auburn's three officers would join the sheriff's office as deputies, another deputy would be hired and the city's three police cruisers and other police gear would become county property.

Kudrna estimated the deal would save the city $120,000 a year.
