Army National Guard soldiers based in Norfolk, Nebraska returned Thursday to family and friends waiting in Omaha.
Seven soldiers from the 181st Engineer Detachment Firefighting Team returned to hugs from family and friends at the Readiness Center at 69th Street and Mercy Road after a year in Afghanistan.
“We know it's pretty darn risky in Afghanistan these days and it's really good to see you back on Nebraska soil,” said Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Dayle Williamson.
One challenge the soldiers faced were the types of fires they were called on to put out. Normally they dealt with building fires and wildfires. In Afghanistan, they had to deal with putting out the flames on aircraft.
