Armed robbers are targeting women in Omaha. It's a good reason to be extra vigilant and know your surroundings.
Here is what the armed robbers are doing. They watch for women who have just been to a bank. When the woman gets in her vehicle they block her in with their car, open her vehicle door, put a gun in her face and steal her wallet.
One victim was visibly upset as she sat with a detective explaining what happened. She was walking back to her car in the Baker's parking lot at 72nd and Ames around 1:30 p.m. Friday when two armed men forcefully took her wallet.
“Oh my gosh, that's unbelievable, in broad daylight," said Melissa Oliver of Lewiston, Nebraska. She had pulled in the parking space next to the victim moments after the robbery, not knowing what had just happened. “She was very upset, that I seen."
The description matches another robbery just before noon on Thursday at the First National Bank at 90th and Fort. It seems the robbers are casing the ATM area in search of a victim with cash.
Since the two robbers left in a black Ford car down Ames Avenue Friday, the police helicopter searched the corridor looking for the getaway car or any clue to track down the men who, in all likelihood, will strike again.
On the ground, officers checked nearby stores to see if security cameras gave them a good look at the robbers. “Armed, yeah, that's scary," said Oliver.
The victim seemed to have a strong support system. One of the men who arrived at the scene after the robbery was a pastor. But no doubt the two robbers have left her sense of safety shaken. Who expects a lunchtime trip to the grocery store to end with a call to 911?
Banks are on alert to be aware of any suspicious activity. If you know something about these dangerous men, call police at 402-444-5626.
