The Beatrice school board has voted to reduce its number to six from nine, starting in January 2015.

The board voted 5-3 for the proposal at a special meeting on Monday night.

Only one of the four seats that come up for election in November 2014 will be filled. The remaining five seats will be contested in November 2016.

Board member Randy Coleman says that of the 242 school boards in Nebraska, 224 have six members, while only 18 have nine-member boards.
