A news release from the Sac County Sheriff's Office says 52-year-old Shirley Schmitt, of Early, was arrested Wednesday. She has since left jail.
The release says deputies found six malnourished horses on her property, which didn't have a working water supply for them.
The carcass of a dead horse also was found.
The horses were taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment. The release says Schmitt relinquished their ownership to Sac County, which is working with the Animal Rescue League to find adoptive homes.
A phone listed for Schmitt has been disconnected. Court records say Schmitt is representing herself.
