An Omaha youngster with leukemia has a long road ahead but a local non-profit is doing what it can to limit extra stress on the family.
"They called it cancer," said Susie Dotson. "My heart dropped and then I went into shock mode."
Her 6-year-old daughter, Lily, was diagnosed a year ago as she was beginning kindergarten. Since then, she's been getting chemotherapy treatment everyday.
Angels Among Us, a local non-profit, currently serves 37 families in Nebraska including the Dotson family.
"The one thing that can help is if we can lesson the burden," said Angie Kubicek with Angels Among Us, "to pay a mortgage payment or electric bill or phone bill -- groceries -- the need doesn't go away."
The organization has one paid employee. It's strength rests in the hands of the donors.
With the two income Dotson family down to one income, the couple's finances loomed over the health of their daughter. A house payment. Regular bills.
"All of a sudden you're scared on how to handle this," said Susie Dotson.
And that's where the organization helps.
As for Lily, she'll be getting treatment until January 2014, and her family relies on this assist from generous donors to get through the challenging times.
Angels Among Us holds its biggest fundraiser of the year on November 2 at Harrah's in Council Bluffs.
