A smoke free park policy to come back before the Plattsmouth City Council .
The coordinator and some youth members of Tobacco Free Cass County (TFCC) went before the mayor and council this week asking for a policy, resolution, law or ordinance for a smoke-free environment at Rhylander Park. After 30 minutes of meeting time discussion and one motion that didn’t pass, the council voted 8 to 0 to direct the city administrator to sit down with TFCC to work on a smoke free policy for all parks according to the Cassgram
TFCC pointed out several benefits of a smoke-free park and pledged assistance with signage, educational materials, planning an announcement event and other assistance if the policy is finalized.
With a policy, the situation would be similar to smoke-free school campuses where individuals are asked to “Please put it out,” said Joan Friedman, TFCC coordinator.
Laws already prohibit underage individuals from smoking, noted Police Chief Steve Rathman.
A vote on a motion that asked for a policy draft on no smoking at just Rhylander failed 6 to 2. Then the unanimous vote came when the smoke-free policy was extended to all parks.
