A December to remember, that’s what most would call the blizzard that hit Omaha in 2009.

It left eleven inches of snow piled in its wake and while that much snow isn't likely to hit in the next couple of days, the first major winter storm of the year has everyone talking.

Tim Schmitt manages the operations at Eppley Airfield. They started planning for the snow three days ago.

“The first event of the year you have to shake off the cobwebs,” says Schmitt. “Time is of the essence to get the runway cleared so its safe for airplanes to land.”

Schimtt says the airport will have staff working at all times and the equipment to keep the runways safe is ready to go. They'll will have five huge brooms on the runway which will take the snow off in as little as 20 to 25 minutes.

Schmitt tells Channel Six there have been no planned cancellations for flights at Eppley so far. But for the latest updates, make sure you check with your airline.

At the post office downtown at11th and Pacific, a line stretched to the door as people rushed to send last minute packages. Jim Stanton was one of those sending his packages last minute. He says he isn’t eager to see more snow because he just got back from Maine.

“We had a six inch snow yesterday morning when I got up. So its kind of a warm up. I don't need this, I’ve already had a taste.”

Despite the expected snow, the post office isn't expecting any delays in delivery so it’s safe to send those Christmas gifts by priority mail as late as Friday.

Suzanne Macaulay sent the afternoon pruning her mums. She says she's looking forward to a white Christmas, but not before her packages arrive.

“We still have a couple deliveries we're waiting on so hopefully they'll be here soon.”
