The rate of complaints against airlines about mishandled baggage is at its lowest level ever on record. The government began tracking complaints in 1988.

In 2011, there were 3.39 reports of mishandled bags for every 1,000 passengers. The new low comes at a time when more and more airlines are charging passengers an extra fee to check in bags.

Here is a list of how the airlines rank according to the number of reports filed of mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers:

1. Airtran 1.63
2. Jetblue 2.21
3. Frontier 2.21
4. Hawaiian Airlines 2.63
5. Delta Airlines 2.66
6. US Airways 2.7
7. Alaska 2.87
