District Court Judge Joe Troia has ruled that murder suspect Mikael Loyd, 20, is competent to stand trial, meaning Loyd will be able to participate in his own defense.
He’s been in the Lincoln Regional Center since February where he has been being treated for mental illness after he was deemed incompetent for trial.
Last August, investigators said he admitted to strangling his girlfriend, Melissa Rodriguez, and leaving her body in an open grave.
It's not clear when there will be a trial.
A motion to suppress evidence is next on the agenda with a hearing next month.
