Accessory To A Felony Suspect Questions Why He's In Jail

There’s another chapter to tell in the story of a major drug bust and officer-involved shooting.

As part of a sting, police were trying to arrest Jason Welch and Jennifer Lovings, March 8th, near 50th and Center. The two were in an SUV boxed in by police cars. Investigators say Lovings started ramming the cruisers. Police fired shots that killed Welch, her passenger; however, Lovings got away and ran for help.

Police have identified Mark Cullinane as an accessory to a felony. Cullinane said Sunday from the Douglas County Jail he doesn’t know why he’s in jail. “I haven't talked to my attorney three minutes after 24 days here,” he said.

According to Cullinane, Lovings showed up at his home and told him she was being shot at. Cullinane says he did not know Lovings and didn't know who was shooting at her. Cullinane said, “I didn't want her to be there in the first place. I was asleep and didn't know what was going on.”

Cullinane said he let Lovings in to use his phone. He claims she called an attorney.

Lovings did later turn herself in outside the Douglas County Corrections Center. Welch later died. Police say he was reaching for a gun, that’s why officers opened fire. So why didn't Cullinane call police the moment Lovings showed up at his door? All he refers to now is hindsight.

“I don't know, I lost a little trusting them to tell the truth. Why'd they bring it to my house? I wouldn't be in jail, there wouldn't be 11 to 12 shots fired, a person probably would be still alive,” said Cullinane.

State law requires a grand jury to investigate anytime someone is killed or injured while in police custody or in the presence of officers.
