ACLU Asking Iowa About Licenses For Immigrants

The American Civil Liberties Union is asking Iowa officials whether the state will grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants granted "deferred action" status by the federal government.

The ACLU says it sent a letter to Iowa Transportation Director Paul Trombino, asking him what the state will do.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has said each state can determine whether to issue licenses or extend other benefits to young immigrants who qualify for the deferred status. The immigrants were brought to the country illegally when they were children.

Some states say they will grant driving privileges to the eligible immigrants. Others states, including Nebraska, have vowed to deny them.

Iowa Transportation Department spokeswoman Dena Gray-Fisher says the department hasn't yet had time to review the letter or respond.
